Why does classic diesel power on the East Coast Mainline feel like progress...?

7

The ECML Diesel Railtour Pack for Train Sim World 5 brings a welcome slice of diesel heritage to the modern East Coast Main Line between Doncaster and Peterborough. Developed by Athena Simulations, this add-on focuses on three iconic locomotives: the powerful Class 40 “Whistler,” the rugged Class 45 “Peak,” (both in classic BR blue) and the star of the show, BR Class 47 no. 47484 “Isambard Kingdom Brunel” resplendent in its GWR green & yellow.

The old meets the new (ish).

Each locomotive is recreated with a strong attention to detail, particularly the standout 47484, which features custom nameplates and unique cab details reflecting its preserved condition. The accompanying Mk1 coaches in BR blue and grey–complete with TSO, BSO, FK, and BG variants—add an authentic finishing touch, marking the first time TSW players have seen such a full set of accurate heritage stock.

Class 40s and 45s get various scenarios.

The pack includes ten engaging scenarios that make full use of these vintage locos, ranging from depot shunts to run-arounds and full-length railtour services. There’s a genuine sense of occasion in scenarios like “Isambard Comes Home,” which recreates the real-life repaint journey of 47484.

The Class 45 doing its stuff.

Timetable layers also add these services across other UK routes for added replay value. However, there are a few shortcomings. Some users have noted that the visuals feel a little flat compared to other recent TSW releases, although I can't say as I noticed that myself. I do think the scenarios can sometimes feel underpopulated due to sparse AI traffic though. At a price point of £11.99 (£10.79 with Game Pass), some might also question the overall value, especially as this pack is largely reskinned locos and reused rolling stock models.

BR Class 47 no. 47484 “Isambard Kingdom Brunel looks stunning.

You probably already know whether you want or need this DLC, but this ECML Diesel Railtour Pack is a heartfelt homage to Britain’s rail heritage–a golden age of rail for many. It’s a must for fans of classic traction and preserved-era operations–though casual players may want to wait for a discount before jumping aboard.
